SURFING, SUN, SAND AND MORE FOR ORPHANS AT RIP CURL’S GIRLS GO SURFING DAY
Nearly 100 girls between the ages of 9 and 12 from three orphanages in Denpasar were treated to surf lessons at Double Six Beach in Legian on November 5, then went home with food goods, school supplies, vouchers, stickers, t-shirts and other goodies that will make this Sunday one of their most memorable days of the year, if not in their entire lives.
This Girls Go Surfing Day was a little different than those held in the past, as for this event sponsors were solicited to give cash and donations in order to make this a charity function for the underprivileged orphan girls of Denpasar, who would ordinarily never get the chance to be introduced to the sport of surfing and have such a fun day with their friends at the beach. Sponsors from various segments of the Bali community joined in to ensure that the girls all went home with plenty of material goods in addition to the stoked feeling that only surfing can give. This Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day was made possible through the support of ID Girl, Oakley, Seaside Restaurant, Blue Ocean Restaurant, Bali Discovery Travel, Light Surfboards, Pegasus Indonesia Tour and Travel and of course the Rip Curl School of Surf.
The event was followed by a ceremony for Tiwi and Ayu, two great friends to many of the Bali Surfing Community who had been killed in an motorbike accident a week before the event. Ayu had played a major part in organizing the Girls Go Surfing days. “She was so kind and friendly to everyone, who could say no to her when she would go looking for sponsors for an event like this? She believed in what she was doing and the success of the event was due to her dedication. We miss her every day,” said Jonni, Manager of the Rip Curl School of Surf.
